Our approach

SRSD

Self-Regulated Strategy Development

Research-backed writing instruction that also builds executive-function skills. Students learn a concrete strategy for planning, drafting, and checking their own work, and then learn to run that process on their own, without needing someone else's structure to get started.

What it is

SRSD teaches writing through explicit, repeatable strategies, then teaches the student to manage their own process: planning before writing, monitoring while writing, and self-editing. It's one of the most heavily studied approaches to writing and also functions as executive-function instruction.

Who it’s for

Students who struggle with not only writing itself, but getting started, staying on track, and finishing projects. It’s for kids who can recognize what a good plan looks like, but often end up with finished work that doesn't reflect that knowledge.

What a session looks like

Students learn by watching an instructor think aloud, then they create a mnemonic chart themselves to help them memorize their strategy. Goals are stated out loud at the start of the session, supported by coaching, and cross-referenced at the end of a project.

The student practices self-talk repeatedly until they can run independently without a therapist’s help.

Ulana's take
The goal is to make myself unnecessary. SRSD is how a student stops borrowing my structure and starts owning their own.
