Orton-Gillingham is the original structured-literacy approach: reading and spelling taught explicitly, in a set sequence, using sight, sound, and touch. The rules of English are shown, practiced, and only then built upon, so a child is never asked to guess at something they were never taught.
Children with dyslexia or other language-based learning differences; kids who benefit from being taught how to read explicitly, rather than being expected to intuit how it works.
Letter tiles moved by hand across the table. Sounds traced in the air and said aloud. Short, focused repetitions, each ending with positive reinforcement and paced so the material is challenging, but never overwhelming.
